As Occupational Therapists, we generally help children and their families for one or more of the following areas:

Play and social interaction: when kids are experiencing challenges in the most important occupation they do on a daily basis: play and social engagement, an OT can come in and assess the underlying causes and provide help to facilitate the child's ability to play as well as join in the social world with others.

ADLs (self-care skills): OTs also play a big role in terms of doing therapy to help a child to become more independent. The everyday routine that you and I feel easy and automatic might cause a lot of frustrations to kids who are struggling in dressing/ feeding/ toileting..etc. OTs can guide the child and the parents to work together to improve participation in self-care activities.

Learning and school participation: it is important for kids to be able to participate and enjoy learning and school activities. There are many factors that might be impacting a child's ability to successfully participate in school setting. OTs can identify the issues and apply helpful strategies to improve participation and achieve their learning goals!

There are also many other things a pediatric OT can do including: parent education, equipment suggestion, environment modification, home program development and so much more!
